Hornets
Proudly Serving Metro Philadelphia Area and Southern New Jersey Homes For Over 20 Years
Hornets are orange-brown flying insects that are often mistaken for Yellow Jackets, which are their close cousins. They can grow up to 2 inches in length. What distinguishes Hornets from Yellow Jackets or Wasps is the relatively large top of their head. Hornets are communal pests that usually build their nests in trees and shrubs or other areas that may be up high and out of common reach. There are 22 cataloged species of Hornets across the Globe.
This group of Hornets are eusocial which means they divide their species into reproductive and non-reproductive groups that take care of the young and have generations of adults in the colony managing tasks and activities.
Our pest control experts suggest that hornets live in nests that are in the pulp of softwood they have masticated. A single queen must be protected by the drones and her safety is top priority over everything else. The workers are asexual female hornets who protect the hive and never reproduce. The male hornet’s sole purpose in life is to mate with the queen hornet.
Hornets are a danger to humans since they will aggressively guard and protect their nests when threatened and if and when they sting, their bite can be more dangerous than that of a honey bee. Hornet stings are more painful to humans because hornet venom contains a large amount of acetylcholine. Individual hornets will sting repeatedly and do not die afterward since their stingers do not remain inside the victim. Their stingers can easily disengage and go back inside their bodies.
Just a single sting from a hornet doesnt usually prove to be fatal to most humans, however, if a person is allergic to the venom the outcome could be disastrous. Multiple stings can prove to be fatal because with each sting another dose of the highly toxic venom is administered to the victim’s skin. People who are allergic to wasp venom are also allergic to hornet venom.
Survey your commercial or residential property by looking for hollowed-out trees and other comfy hotspots you think Hornets may like, clear them out or close them up to prevent hornets from moving in. If hornets dont have a place to build a nest, they are very unlikely to become a problem that would require an exterminator.
If you would like to implement a long-term natural solution to a hornet pest problem, you could plant herbs that hornets dislike, which include mint, peppermint and wormwood at the edge of your garden. This will keep hornets from setting up shop near or on your commercial or residential property.
Managing a Hornet infestation is best handled by pest control professionals. If an infestation has already occurred, dont try to rid your property of these pests yourself as they are very territorial and will sting you, your family and even small pets. These pests will return annually and your residential or commercial property will require ongoing hornet maintenance.
Hornets are unlikely to to cause any damage to the structure of your home or business, however, they are extremely dangerous since they are territorial insects that will sting anyone they deem as a threat to their nest. Hornets sound the “alarm” to other hornets by releasing a pheromone that alerts the rest of the hive to join in on the attack and sting as well. A group attack can be very dangerous to humans and/or animals if they so happen to be allergic to their venom.
Having Hornets in or around your business is extremely unsafe for your customers due to the possibility of them getting a venomous sting which can have a negative effect on your business.
